1. The SSD Shot was the highest volume pattern in the sample and returned one GrA chance on 24 possessions.
- 24 of the 200 tagged instances, the largest single count of any pattern. Those 24 fell on 24 separate possessions.
- Every one of the 24 produced a shot. 24 chances, 24 shots, no dry attempts.
- 1 GrA chance on those 24 (4.2%), and 0 goals.
- 7 of the 24 were blocked, the highest block count of any pattern in the sample. The next highest was High EW Passing Play at 5 of 20, then three patterns at 4.
- Support around the puck was thin across the same 24 possessions: 3 screens tagged and 5 rebounds created. 6 of 24 continued.
- What the sample contained: shot volume that largely did not survive to the net and did not convert into danger.

2. High EW Passing Play was the one pattern that both created danger and kept the puck.
- 20 possessions, 5 GrA chances (25.0%), the joint highest GrA rate among patterns with 12 or more possessions, level with BGL Attacks at 3 of 12 (25.0%).
- 11 of 20 continued, the highest continuation count of any pattern in the sample. It created and it retained on the same possessions.
- 12 of 20 produced a chance, 12 shots, 5 blocked, 0 goals.
- Loose Puck Attack is the contrast. 18 possessions, 4 GrA (22.2%), a comparable danger rate, but only 2 of 18 continued. It generated 15 chances on 18 possessions and then the possession ended.
- H2L to SSF sits between the two: 20 possessions, 4 GrA (20.0%), 6 continued, and 2 of the sample's 5 goals, the only pattern with more than one goal.
- Two patterns at a similar GrA rate with different possession consequences. In these 8 games the High EW Passing Play kept the shift alive and the Loose Puck Attack did not.

Coaching Point
Build on High EW Passing Play, the one pattern that both created danger and kept the puck. Use the Loose Puck Attack late in the shift, where the possession ending is a smaller cost.

3. Watch item, directional only: the Activations and the Seam Pass.
- EW Activation: 3 GrA on 6 possessions (50.0%), 1 goal.
- Seam Pass: 2 GrA on 5 possessions (40.0%).
- SSD Activation: 1 GrA on 6 possessions (16.7%).
- WSD Activation: 1 GrA on 7 possessions (14.3%), 1 goal.
- Combined, these four patterns are 24 possessions producing 7 of the 28 GrA chances and 2 of the 5 goals.
- Every one of these four cells is under 10 instances, and none of them can carry a conclusion. One chance either way moves EW Activation from 50.0% to 33.3% or 66.7%. The same is true of all four.
- The value of this note is that these four are worth tracking as the sample grows. Nothing here is established, and nothing in this section should be turned into a call on the strength of these 8 games.

Coaching Points
Build on
- High EW Passing Play. 5 GrA on 20 possessions and 11 of 20 continued. The only pattern in this sample that led on both danger and retention.
- H2L to SSF as the low finish. 4 GrA and 2 of the sample's 5 goals on 20 possessions, the only pattern with more than one goal.
- BGL Attacks. 3 GrA on 12 (25.0%) with 6 of 12 continued. Directional at 12 possessions, so treat it as a watch item rather than a call.
- Loose Puck Attack late in the shift, where the possession ending is a smaller cost. 15 chances and 4 GrA on 18 possessions, against only 2 of 18 continued.
Reduce
- SSD Shot taken from a static point with no screen. 1 GrA and 7 blocks on 24 possessions, with 3 screens tagged across the whole 24. Cutting the low value share of that volume costs at most one GrA chance on this sample.
- Rims to Post as a first choice out of the corner. 13 possessions, 2 chances, 0 GrA. It retained on 6 of 13, and that is all it did here.
- Reset possessions that end where they start. 7 of the 17 Resets neither continued nor produced a chance, and none of the 17 produced a chance at all.
Methodology Caveats
- Sample and scope. 8 tagged games, November 22 2025 to January 21 2026, 5v5 only. No special teams situations are included in any count in this report.
- What the 200 are. Tagged offensive zone play patterns, counted per instance rather than per possession. They sit across 143 possessions, because one possession can carry more than one pattern. They are not all offensive zone time in the 8 games. Possessions with no tagged pattern sit outside this report entirely.
- GrA attribution. GrA counts include continuations on the originating possession. A possession that continued into a further pattern and produced its GrA chance there is still counted against the originating possession.
- Small cells. Every cell under roughly 20 instances is directional. Seventeen of the 20 patterns sit under 20 possessions, and every finding resting on one of them says so in its own sentence rather than in a footnote.
- Goals. There are 5 goals across the 200 tagged instances. At that count no per-pattern goal rate is meaningful, and none is reported as a rate anywhere in this report.
- Rates and denominators. GrA% is GrA chances divided by possessions carrying that pattern. The denominator is shown in every table and in every claim in the text.
